Overview
The module will cover a range of contemporary issues in IT strategy and governance.
Objectives
- Discuss and critique key challenges of the IT industry and the IT profession
- Discuss and critique the competing demands on and the potential transformational impact of information technology in a complex organisation
- Develop a critically aware approach to the governance of IT in complex organisations
- Evaluate and reconcile the sometimes conflicting pressures exerted by the social, business, legal, technical and ethical implications of working as an IT professional
- Communicate complex or contentious issues in IT to an audience
Curriculum
Strategy, IT
The IT industry: its historical development; structure, size, distribution and global reach of the industry; providers and users and their shifting relationships; outsourcing; standards and standardisation; technological evolution and trajectories.
The concepts of digital disruption and digital transformation as part of the strategic alignment between business needs and IT. The emergence of new technologies and their integration into IT practice within organisations.
Organisation and Governance and the role of the IT Profession:
This will include issues concerning the organisation and governance of IT services in organisations (the structure, role, competences and capabilities of the IT function), for example:
The role of the IT function in organisation The role of the CIO and IT Professional in organisations Leadership of the IT vision and Leadership of the IT Function Client and User Relations Sustainability, Green IT and “IT for Green” Strategic decisions in Information Systems and Information Technology IT Service Management (ITIL) Outsourcing Legal framework and obligations (including data protection, computer misuse, health and safety, disability discrimination)
